Open Letter to the Susan G. Komen Foundation
Published February 1st, 2012I also emailed them this letter.
Hey, Susan G. Komen Foundation, you just just destroyed your reputation by defunding Planned Parenthood.
I have both a personal and professional interest in beating cancer. I work in cancer research. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, treated and beat it. She now volunteers much of her time helping others deal with the diagnosis and treatment through the American Cancer Society. In the past, I have donated money to friends and family who have participated in your fundraising walks and races. I have happily bought items during Breast Cancer Awareness month with the Komen logo.
But no more. No. I will not donate one dollar to your organization, I will not buy any items with your logo on it. If friends ask me to sponsor them when they run a race, I will decline and donate what I would have directly to Planned Parenthood, and I will tell them why.
Your decision flies in the face of Nancy G. Brinker’s promise to her sister to do everything in her power end breast cancer forever. It is pathetic and indefensible.
Cancer screening and prevention comprises 17 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services. For many low-income women, Planned Parenthood is their only source of health care. By going along with anti-choice extremists who are determined to put Planned Parenthood out of business, you are essentially saying it doesn’t matter if low-income women get breast cancer.
Pretty amazing, and truly disgusting.
Cephyn
